Transtension at the Northern Termination of the Alfeo-Etna Fault System (Western Ionian Sea, Italy): Seismotectonic Implications and Relation with Mt. Etna Volcanism

چکیده

Offshore data in the western Ionian Sea indicate that NW–SE-trending dextral shear zone of Alfeo-Etna Fault System turns to N–S direction near coastline, where extensional Timpe is located. Morpho-structural show right-lateral strike-slip faults connect with upper slope volcano, eruptive activity mainly occurs along NE–SW-trending fissures. systems are related ~E–W-trending extension and they seismically active having given rise shallow low-moderate magnitude earthquakes last 150 years. As a whole, morpho-structural, geodetic seismological data, seismic profiles bathymetric maps suggest similar geometric kinematic features characterize both on eastern flank volcano offshore. The probably represents major boundary associated Africa–Europe plate convergence since it accommodates, by kinematics, differential motion adjacent compartments. Along this tectonic alignment, crustal structures such as releasing bends, pull-apart basins horsetails occur offshore on-land, represent pathway for magma uprising from depth.

Flank instability at Mt. Etna

Due to their constant and relatively rapid growth, volcanic edifices are inherently unstable. Flank instability is observed at many polygenetic stratovolcanoes, composite volcanoes and shield volcanoes worldwide. Flank instability may occur suddenly, or develop in a more continuous and subtle way, accelerated by triggering events (magma emplacement, eruptions and earthquakes). Destabilization i...

Seismic footprints of shallow dyke propagation at Etna, Italy

One of the key issues in forecasting volcanic eruptions is to detect signals that can track the propagation of dykes towards the surface. Continuous monitoring of active volcanoes helps significantly in achieving this goal. The seismic data presented here are unique, as they document surface faulting processes close (tens to a few hundred meters) to their source, namely the dyke tip. They origi...

FIFTEEN YEARS OF ERS AND ENVISAT DInSAR OBSERVATIONS AT MT. ETNA (ITALY) BY USING THE SBAS APPROACH

We exploited the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) technique and computed ground displacement maps and time series by inverting 283 interferograms generated from the ascending and 289 from the descending orbits to reveal Mt. Etna surface deformation from 1992 to 2006. Our analysis shows that the volcano experienced magmatic inflation/deflation and radial spreading of the west, south and east flanks....

Deep Earthquakes as a Precursor of the September- October 1989 Flank Eruption at Mt. Etna Volcano (italy)

The September-October 1989 flank eruption at Mt. Etna marked a change in the recent eruptive style of the volcano. Seismicity, at mid (order of months) and short (order of days) time, preceding the eruption onset has been analysed by means of D (time fractal dimension), and of materials science equation. The behaviour of the upper and lower crust volumes has been investigated, by considering sh...
